Give Families a break on childcare

Families are being hit by a triple whammy from the Tory-led Government: less financial support for childcare, rising childcare costs and less childcare availability.

The Tories are out of touch. David Cameron is making life harder for the squeezed middle by cutting vital childcare services and tax credits.

The Tory-led Government has:

  • Cut £1.4 billion from the funding for Sure Start and other early intervention programmes – a 22% cut.
  • Cut the childcare support that parents can claim through tax credits – costing hundreds of thousands of families over £400 a year.
  • Left over half of local authorities with shortages of affordable holiday childcare.

Cutting childcare support makes no sense at all if it simply makes it harder for parents to go out to work – that just ends up costing the taxpayer more.

The Tory-led Government needs to think again. Local Tories and Lib-Dems need to think again. They need to work with local authorities to ensure there are enough childcare places and projects to support working parents this summer.
