I am a strong believer in the medicinal value of cannabis and was hopeful that the change of law last November would result in medicinal cannabis being prescribed to those who clearly need it. This, sadly, has not been the case. The new law has proven ineffective and restrictive in a number of ways.

Supply chain issues have meant that even those very few patients who have actually managed to receive a prescription will often have to wait huge lengths of times before actually receiving their cannabis-based medicines. This is owing to the fact that we are importing the supply and every stage of the process is very tightly regulated, adding to the delay. Whilst of course this process is in need of regulation, we also need to ensure that this regulation compliments a system that achieves its desired ends.

If this wasn’t enough, costs of £695 for a month’s supply result in bittersweet outcomes for patients at best and complete exclusion at worst . The whole system needs to be reviewed.
