Fox hunting is a barbaric and medieval activity. We must be strengthening the law outlawing it, not repelling it.
Fox hunting is a barbaric and medieval activity. We must be strengthening the law outlawing it, not repelling it.

Jeremy Hunt, alongside the views of many other Tories, pledged to bring back fox hunting if he was elected as Prime Minister, arguing that it is “part of our heritage.” This would be an abhorrent move and serves as a reminder that we cannot take for granted the strides in animal welfare standards we have achieved – and that these developments are fragile. It is vital we keep fighting for animal welfare rights.

I am proud that the Labour Party have pledged to strengthen the Hunting Act, closing all loopholes that allow for illegal hunting of foxes and hares. I have also signed EDM #25 calling for the Government to maintain and strengthen the Hunting Act 2004.

I have signed various Early Day Motions that signify his discontent with the state of the law as it currently stands, calling for greater protection for animals. Among these include: EDM #1138 on encouraging greater levels of protection for racing horses and EDM #412 on banning live imports for slaughter and fattening, among many others.

In addition, I am a strong supporter of the #NotFunny campaign by Battersea Cats and Dogs Home on raising the minimum criminal sentence for animal cruelty. I welcomed the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) Bill which proposes to increase these sentences from six months to five years for the most serious offence.

I will oppose any action taken by the government to reintroduce fox hunting and will continually fight for stronger animal welfare rights.
